Nursing Student Opportunities
Going beyond the classroom
Books. Check. Mid Terms. Check. Senior Practicum, Late Night Cram Sessions, Community Health Experiences. Check. Check. Check. In the constant flux of the day to day student load of classes, faculty and exams, sometimes it's easy to lose sight of why you are doing all of this to begin with. What does my future in nursing look like? How can I distinguish myself from my peers? How can I translate the foundation of my classroom learning to the real world of nursing in the 21st century?
At Northside Hospital, we know that you have worked hard to get to this place in time. You made the cut to get into your program, you've studied hard, and now, you are looking for the next step. Although each nursing program offers a wide variety of experiences, we like to think that we can offer you that "something extra".
Northside Scholars Leadership Development Program
Northside feels that it essential to teach and lead today's students, who will become tomorrow's nurses. The Northside Scholars Leadership Development Program was created to provide scholarship opportunity for high-performing nursing students. Applicants are rising junior or senior students in their nursing program. The program seeks high-achieving, well-rounded individuals who will help further the hospital's commitment to being a center of excellence in providing high-quality health care. Up to twelve students can be chosen each year, and each participant is matched with a manager mentor, who is assigned to the student and provides guidance during their remaining years in school and when they join Northside as a staff RN. Each Scholar participates in a customized job shadowing program and they rotate through different clinical services. Upon graduation and successful completion of the nursing boards, the Scholar is placed into a formal internship program and has a two year work commitment to the hospital. Current Northside employees are not eligible for the program.

Extern Program
Northside's paid extern program provides Nursing students who have completed their Junior year with an opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience. Externs are assigned to a specific unit and perform tech functions under the direction of an RN. Flexible scheduling allows the extern to obtain "real world" experience while keeping school the top priority. After graduation and successful completion of the nursing boards, externs have priority placement into a formal internship program.

Job Shadowing
Our job shadowing program allows individuals considering a career in the healthcare industry the opportunity to visit different areas of the hospital to get a better understanding of what they may experience working in a healthcare facility. Job Shadowing is a great opportunity to get a first-hand view of our various specialty units.
